Louisiana LLC Name Expectations

When it comes to searching for an LLC name, it is important to know what the underlying requirements are.

1) For an LLC name to be relevant and valid, it needs to have “L.L.C” or “LLC” in the name.

2) It’s also important to note an LLC is not noted as a corporation, which means you can’t use that word in your name including other similar words such as “Inc.” “Corp.” and/or “Incorporated” to name a few.

3) It is always recommended to have a name that is 100% distinguishable from everything else in the database.

This also means not trying to trick the system by including “The” in front of an already established LLC name in hopes of getting it passed. This will not work and is a waste of your time.

A few examples of doing this would include A, The, Hyphens, Two vs. 2, or and.

Assume there is a name in the database named “Painting Specialists” you can’t go forward with “The Painting Specialists” in the hopes it will get approved because it won’t.

Using the Lousiana Name Database

1) Type in the Website

To begin, you are going to visit the database search page- https://coraweb.sos.la.gov/CommercialSearch/CommercialSearch.aspx

2) Look for Your LLC

At this point, you are going to type in the LLC name in the search box.

When doing this, make sure to keep “LLC” out of the search phrase. It’s also important to note, you will not have to care for capitalization because it will automatically write everything in uppercase letters.

If you wish to be detailed, you can use the first few words of the name to ensure it is as similar as possible to what you’re looking for. Let’s assume you are searching for James and Sons Plumbing, you can type James and Sons.

You can also just type in a little bit of the first word as the search phrase. A good example would be a shop named “Painting Solutions LLC” and you typing Paint.

3) Sift Through the Results

When you go through the search results, look through each active business to learn more about your options.

If the database returns “Total Results: 0” then you have a valid LLC name that hasn’t been used before.

On the other hand, if you notice other LLC names that are similar but not identical, you can still move forward with the LLC name in Louisiana without worry.

The only time you are going to have to move to another LLC name is when it is already taken as an identical match in the database by someone else. At this point, you are going to have to move towards another option.

In rare cases where the results are almost similar but different to your LLC name, it’s likely not going to be available to use. It is better to look towards another LLC name to stay safe and get approved.

In general, you can always test things out when it comes to a name that is close but not identical in the database. To do this, just fill out the name request form and see what the state of Louisiana has to say. At worst, they are going to ask you to go with something else.
